THE KRAYS – LAST KINGS OF LONDON
Story
1960s London, the heyday of the notorious crime families: The Krays and The Richardsons.
The Metropolitan Police is riddled with corruption, and bribery is endemic. Deputy Chief Inspector Leonard “Nipper” Read is assigned to investigate the murder of George Cornell, shot to death by Ronnie Kray in the Blind Beggar pub.
DCI Read eventually persuades the only available witness, known as “Mrs. X,” to testify. A single mother of three, she remains under police protection to this day, more than fifty years later.
For over a decade, organised gangs dominated London. This film tells the story of how the police struggled to bring them down, and it emphasises the courage of one woman who stood up to be counted. With the support of the first regional crime squad in the UK, she played a key role in bringing down the empire that had plagued the capital for over a decade.
In today’s society, where gangsters are often glamourised and revered, this film aims to show them as they truly were, while celebrating the courage of our unsung hero, “Mrs. X.”
Director – Ray Burdis
Ray Burdis is an award-winning writer, director, and producer with more than four decades of experience in British film and television. He produced The Krays (1990), which grossed over £100 million and remains a cult classic. His filmography includes The Wee Man, To Be Someone, and the BAFTA-winning Operation Good Guys.
With The Krays – Last Kings of London, Ray returns to the story that launched his career, determined to set the record straight and strip away the glamorisation of violence that has long surrounded the Krays.
